Guna Rajagopal, PhD appointed Scientific Vice President & Fellow, Computational Sciences, Discovery Sciences

 Gunaretnam (Guna) Rajagopal, PhD, one of Janssen R&D's most highly respected and globally renowned scientist has been appointed to the prestigious role, scientific vice president and fellow, computational sciences, discovery sciences, effective july 12.



the appointment recognize Guna's sought after scientific expertise in the field of genomics, human genetics and translational informatics, and his exemplary external reputation through his involvement with numerous high-profile external collaborations on Janssen's behalf. specifically, he has taken the lead on collaborations with the Uk Biobank, the Pasteur Institute as part of the French Genomic medicine initiative, and the Oxford Translational Genomics Felllowship program.


Prior to joining Janssen, Guna Served as Executive Director, Bionformatics, for the Cancer Institute of New Jersey; Adjunct Professor, Department of Radiation Oncology, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School; and was a member of Arnold Levine's Simons Center for Systems Biology at the Institute for Advanced study, Princeton. Guna was founding Executive Director of the Bioinformation institute in Singapore, where he was mentored by Sidney Brenner and collaborated Closely with thought leaders in the field of oncology such as Sir David Lane. He also held research and teaching postions in theoretical and computational physics at the Cavendish Laboratory and as fellow Of jesus college, University of Cambridge. 


A published author on over 60 publications, Guna, in the last 6 years alone, has published on topics as varied as large-scale whole genome sequencing analysis, the path from big data to precision medicine, and protein structure optimization. Additionally, most recently, Guna served as an independent reviewer of the report on systems-level thinking in regenerative medicine, by the United State National Academics.


Guna earned a M.S in Physics and a Ph.D in Theoretical Physics both from the Georgia Institute of Technology; and a M.Sc in High Energy Physics and B.Sc Ed, both from the Univeristy of Malaya.
